RV & Boat Storage Tips

When it’s time to put your RV or boat away for the season, a little preparation makes a big difference. Taking a few extra steps now will protect your investment, reduce maintenance costs, and ensure your vehicle is ready to roll or float when you are.

RV Storage Tips

  • Empty and Sanitize Water Systems – Drain all water from tanks, lines, and the water heater. Add RV-safe antifreeze to plumbing if storing in cold weather.
  • Protect the Interior – Remove food, wipe down surfaces, and vacuum to keep pests and odors away. Place moisture absorbers inside to prevent mold and mildew.
  • Prep the Engine and Fuel System – Top off the gas tank and add a fuel stabilizer. Change the oil and filter to prevent corrosion inside the engine.
  • Check Tires and Weight – Inflate tires to the recommended PSI and, if possible, place the RV on blocks or move it occasionally to prevent flat spots.
  • Disconnect the Battery – Remove and store in a cool, dry place. Use a trickle charger to keep it healthy over long periods.
  • Seal Openings – Cover vents and small openings with mesh or screens to keep rodents from nesting inside.
  • Cover the RV – A breathable RV cover protects against sun damage, bird droppings, and debris without trapping moisture.

Boat Storage Tips

  • Flush and Drain Water Systems – Flush the engine with fresh water, drain bilges, and dry compartments thoroughly.
  • Stabilize Fuel and Fluids – Top off the fuel tank, add stabilizer, and change engine oil, coolant, and filters before storage.
  • Protect the Hull – Wash the hull and apply a coat of wax to prevent corrosion. If stored on a trailer, ensure the trailer tires are inflated and lubricate wheel bearings.
  • Remove Electronics and Valuables – Take out GPS units, radios, and other electronics for safe storage indoors.
  • Prevent Moisture Damage – Use moisture absorbers inside the cabin or storage compartments to reduce mold and mildew risk.
  • Cover the Boat – Use a snug, breathable boat cover to shield against dirt, dust, and UV rays. If stored outdoors, ensure the cover is tightly secured against wind and weather.

General Storage Tips

  • Keep insurance active for protection.
  • Visit your RV or boat periodically to check for leaks, pests, or tire pressure issues.
  • Use wheel locks or security devices for added peace of mind.
  • Label and store keys in a safe, accessible place.
